One of the most unique experiences you can have in Aruba is snorkelling with sea turtles. There are several species of sea turtles living in Aruba and some are there year round. One of the best places to see a turtle is at Tres Trapi, just north of Malmok Beach.
Where is Tres Trapi?
Tres Trapi is often referred to as a beach but it’s not really a beach. Tres Trapi is a spot where a few steps have been carved into the coral shoreline. There is a small patch of sand at the bottom of the steps where you can stand and put on your fins and mask.
Tres Trapi is just north of Malmok beach. It’s about a 5 minute drive from Treasure Palms and Palm beach. The best way to get there is by car.
Where are the sea turtles?
Once you get into the water, swim straight out and look for dark patches of grass on the sea floor. Turtles can be anywhere in the area in front of Tres Tapi and so if you don’t see one, swim around in the areas where it is grassy. Sometimes you’ll see other people floating in one spot, it’s probably because they have found a turtle.
If you see a turtle on the bottom, wait patiently for it to come up for air, that’s when you can see them up close. Please do not try to touch or feed the turtles, they are a protected species.
When is the best time to see turtles at Tres Trapi?
The best time to go is early in the morning before the crowds and tour boats arrive. We like to go just after 8 AM.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer to see turtles?
Sometimes the turtles are further out and you’ll be in 20+ feet of water. The waters are usually pretty calm and the current isn’t too strong. That said, fins are strongly recommended. Some people bring a pool noodle or other floatation device to keep them afloat.
